Do you know a woman or are you a woman who is making a powerful difference in her/your neighborhood through her/your volunteer efforts? If so, submit an entry about it in a total of 200 words or less telling us what you or your nominee is doing and how it is impacting your or her neighborhood by answering the following two questions. 1) What specific situations has the nominee worked to improve in her neighborhood? and 2) How has the nominee helped others in her neighborhood? Example: “My nominee, the only African-American teacher in the school system, realized that our African-American children were dying academically. They were scoring in the 20th percentile on standardized tests. With the help of a few members in the community, my Nominee gave birth to an after-school program within walking distance of the children she needed to teach in an impoverished, drug-infested and predominantly African-American neighborhood. Those who aren't within walking distance, she picks up and takes home. Four years later she is still going strong, putting the children in the neighborhood first. With the support of her husband and one full-time volunteer, she has raised the scores from the 20th percentile to the 80th percentile in reading and the 90th percentile in math. This program has sustained for four years without any state or federal funding.”
To enter online, log on to www.powerfuldifference.com and complete the requested information, including your essay (“Entry”). To enter by mail, answer the two requested questions in a total of 200 words or less on a plain piece of 8½" x 11" paper and include your name, address, daytime phone number and e-mail address (optional).
